Lisa Knotts

Bio

For years a stay-at-home mom, Lisa Knotts has published her first book, A SUMMER ABROAD: CLOTHESLINES, BOUCHONS, AND SNAILS THAT EAT THE MAIL, a travel memoir recounting her favorite summer. She lives with her husband and three children in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Ms. Knotts is a graduate of the writing programs at Louisiana State University and the University of Texas at Austin.

About the Book

In 2006, after two years of shuttling her husband to and from the airport while he traveled to France regularly for work, de facto single mother Lisa Knotts was rewarded with the opportunity of a lifetime: to move her family to France for the summer. In spite of three occasionally reluctant children and a husband who often had to work, Lisa endeavored to make the most of her family's time in Europe. A Summer Abroad invites you along as the author and her family blitz-tour Paris in a day (and listen to seven-year-old Michael expound on paintings in the d'Orsay), eat their way around Belgium with Lisa's cousins, walk the D-Day beaches in Normandy, and wander the streets of Pompeii with Vesuvius looming in the distance. Along with these road trips and the weekend jaunts around Provence, the unhurried living of everyday life in a small fishing village on the Mediterranean Côte Bleue translated the author's vague, youthful fantasy of living abroad into quirky, delightful reality, complete with marauding snails.

Resonating with those who have either lived overseas or traveled with children, this memoir has the power to charm anyone who's dreamed of spending a summer abroad.

How We Met

Lisa and I met when her youngest son was 2 ½ years old (today, he is in high school) and we were both members of the same St. Aloysius Catholic Church Small Christian Community group (SCC).  Lisa teaches English at Baton Rouge Community College and I experienced her teaching skills firsthand when she led a SCC meeting and guided us to explore a Flannery O’Connor short story.  The story and our discussion remain in my mind many years later.

I cherish this post card I received from Lisa and her family’s trip to France when her husband worked there, the very trip that she writes about in her book, and it decorates my dresser.
